| Tourism sector companies have come forward with offers to help bail out troubled Cyprus Turkish Airlines in a takeover bid. Officials from several companies notified the Public Works and Transport Ministry and President Dervis Eroglu of their desire to take possession of the airline last Friday. The application has come at a time when CTA is reported to be in great financial difficulty. The Cyprus Turkish Travel Agents Union issued a written statement, saying that they had submitted an application for ownership of CTA dated May 10, 2010, as requested by President Dervis Eroglu. We have undertaken comprehensive work as the tourism sector officials, representatives and businessmen in order to reform and continue the existence of our national airline, the statement said. The Cyprus Turkish Travel Agents Union (KITSAB), the Cyprus Turkish Hoteliers Union, the Cyprus Turkish Restaurateurs Union, the Cyprus Turkish Guides and Rental Cars Association all signed the application, which said that the organisations had the objective of reconstructing CTA, to contribute to the economy of the country, to provide beneficial service to the education and tourism sectors. The application was submitted to President Dervis Eroglu and the Public Works and Transport minister Hasan Tacoy, following the call made by President Eroglu for civil organisations and sectors to the necessary responsibility. The future of the airline was further thrown into question on Thursday with the resignation of CTA chairman Erol Atakan, along with board members Mehmet Zeki Karahanoglu, Professor Ferhat Erisir and Baris Kokoglu. In a statement announcing their resignation the men thanked all of the staff at CTA, the Turkish embassy in Lefkosa and the Civil Airlines Bureau and Turkish Airlines for their help in trying to maintain the airline. 21.05.2010 (Number of hits 49) |
